Velvet-leaved Blueberry (Vaccinium myrtilloides) Michaux, 1803

Vaccinium myrtilloides is common in much of boreal and temperate Canada and the northeastern United States (Map). It grows in acidic soils in open coniferous woods (including recently burned or logged sites), muskegs, bogs, and barrens; 0-1,700 m. A low spreading deciduous shrub, up to 50 cm in height, often forming colonies. The twigs are greenish-brown, covered with tiny hairs. The leaves are elliptic, with entire margins and hairy surfaces; deciduous. The flowers are 3-5 mm long; bell-shaped, with green calyx, and greenish white to pink corolla; arranged in hanging clusters at the ends of twigs. The fruit is a dark blue berry. V. myrtilloides flowers in late spring-early summer.
